FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
We are a new school and with that comes some questions. Here are some of the common questions we get. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out via phone or email.
How many classrooms do you have?
We have a single classroom and a multipurpose room. Montessori classrooms are mixed-age, meaning that we are trained to accomodate a group of children between the ages of 3 and 6. We have preschoolers, pre-kindergarteners, and kindergarteners working together. Children stay in the same class, with the same teachers and classmates, for the duration of their time with us.
Do you serve snacks and lunch?
All parents send a morning snack from home and parents whose children are enrolled in our Full Day program also provide a second snack for the afternoon. The children help themselves to snack during the morning work period and afternoon snack takes place after playtime.
All School Day and Full Day children are required to bring a lunch from home in an insulted lunch bag. We are unable to refrigerate or reheat food, so please plan accordingly with ice packs or insulated thermos containers.
At this time we do not have the appropriate facilities necessary to prepare and serve food.
Does my child need to be potty trained to start?
We are not set up to accommodate children in diapers. At a minimum, we expect children to be in the process of toilet training and to wear underwear to school, not pull-ups. We will work with families to help their child complete the toilet training process and are happy to help child remember to use the bathroom. We will assist as needed and understand that accidents happen. If this is an area of concern for you, please be sure to discuss it with us during your tour.
Are you a nut-free facility?
We are not a 100% nut-free facility.
We do not serve peanuts, tree nuts, or products that "contain or may contain peanuts or tree nuts" or were "made in a facility or on equipment that processes peanuts or tree nuts."
We ask that any special snacks or food that is sent in to be shared by all the children be peanut and nut-free, but do not require our families to refrain from sending peanut or tree nut products for their own child.
If your child has a nut allergy, please be sure to discuss it with us during your tour.
Are you a licensed facility?
Yes, we are licensed by the Virginia Department of Education as a Child Day Center. This means you can rest assured that our facilities, program, and staff have all met with the rigorous standards set by the VDOE. Licensed facilities are subject to regular inspections and must maintain compliance with the licensing standards.
Are your teachers licensed?
Our lead Montessori teacher, Karen Disney, is also the Owner and Director of Shenandoah Montessori School. Ms. Karen has been a certified Montessori teacher for 20 years. She also has more than 15 years of experience as an Assistant Director for a school in Reston, VA. Ms. Karen has a BA in English from George Mason University and received her Montessori Early Childhood Credentials from the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies in Silver Spring, MD.
All staff members undergo a thorough background check, reference check, and are certified in CPR and First Aid. Our staff receives a minimum of 16 hours of training annually in a variety of topics relevant to the field of Early Childhood Education.
